About Us

The National Registration Bureau was established in 1978 to implement the Registration of Persons Act, Cap 107, laws of Kenya. The Act provides for mandatory identification, registration and issuance of identity cards to all persons who are citizens of Kenya and who have attained the age of eighteen years or over.

To contribute to National Security, Socio-economic and Political Development of the Country by

Identifying, Registering and Issuing Identity Cards to Kenyan Citizens of age 18 years or over, and to

maintain a Comprehensive Register for use by Stakeholders and other Authorized Agencies.

Leadership

Dr. Christopher Wanjau is the Secretary of National Registration. He is a career public officer with over 20 years of service in various capacities. Before his current appointment, Dr. Wanjau was the Director, Registration and Licensing, at the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). He has also served in various ranks within the National Government Administration structure. 

At NRB, he has successfully overseen the smooth transition from the second generation of ID cards to the Third Generation Maisha Card ID. He has also steered the automation of registration processes that provides for the Live Capture registration for first time ID Applicants.

He holds a PhD in Business Management (Strategic Management) from Karatina University and two masters degrees: Public Administration (Moi University) and an MBA in Strategic Management (Catholic University of Eastern Africa). He is also a graduate of the University of Nairobi (Bachelors of Arts, Public Administration).

Our Services

First time ID registration

This is primarily for those who have just turned 18.

Requirements are;

  • Birth Certificate – Original and a copy
  • Either Parents’ ID Card Copy
  • Academic Certificate – To ensure we get your name right
  • This service is offered Free of charge.

Duplicate ID registration

This is when you lose your ID or it gets old and mutilated.

  • A police Abstract or letter from an administrator
  • Ksh. 1,050 which is the fee for this application and is paid via eCitizen

Change of particulars  

This can be change of surname due to marriage or change of name to incorporate changed beliefs.

Requirements are;

  • Marriage certificate or Divorce decree
  • Deed poll and Gazette Notice
  • Sworn Affidavit
  • The prescribed fee of Ksh. 1,050 which is paid via eCitizen.

FAQs

No, you have to appear in person before the Registrar in order to apply for an ID Card.

Maisha Card is the Third Generation National ID

All Kenyans aged 18 and over are eligible for Registration and issuance of a Maisha Card

You can apply for a Maisha Card by visiting any Registration Office or Huduma Centre closest to you.

Yes, there is a fee for issuance of the Maisha Card. The prescribed fee for a First time ID/Maisha Card is Ksh. 300 while a Duplicate Maisha Card attracts a fee of Ksh. 1,050.

You should report the loss of your Maisha card at the police station and receive a police abstract.
